RETROVIRUSES
Retroviruses are RNA viruses that have an unique reproduction cycle and are enclosed. It has reverse transcriptase as an enzyme.) When it enters the cytoplasm of a host cell, it aids in the formation of a DNA strand that is complementary to viral RNA.
Reverse transcriptase then produces another DNA strand, but this one is not complementary to viral DNA. The two DNA strands combine to create a circular, double-stranded chromosome, which migrates to the nucleus and merges with a host chromosome. The host's RNA polymerase then transcribes the integrated viral genes, resulting in viral DNA for virions to assemble. Leukemia (HTLV-I human T-cell leukaemia virus) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome are two illnesses caused by retroviruses in humans (AIDS).
