RAWALPINDI: At least 22 tourists died in Murree on Friday night after becoming stuck in their vehicles owing to severe snowfall.
Divisional Emergency Officer Abdul Rehman revealed to ARY News that 21 tourists perished of exposure to the cold at the hill resort, which has been declared a calamity-hit region with army forces dispatched to rescue visitors still stuck there.
While a rescue and evacuation effort is continuing in the mountainous terrain, the dead toll has risen to 22.
Tourists from Karachi, Lahore, Mardan, and other locations were among those killed.
During 100,000 cars entered Murree over the last three days, according to a report submitted to Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar by the Rawalpindi government. 12,000 of them were able to leave the hill station, while the others were stranded.
According to the report, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) failed to notify the district administration of the expected unusual snowfall in the mountainous area.
