DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS
Candida dubliniensis (not described) has an identical blochemical profile and morphological appearance but chlamydospore production is much more abundant.
C. tropicalis has a similar morphological appearance but is able to ferment sucrose.
SEXUAL STATE
None known.
CLINICAL IMPORTANCE
It can cause localised disseminated dcep- scated infection in debilitated or immuno-compromised individuals, but is more commonly seen causing mucosal, cutancous or nail infection. It can be isolated from the mouth and gastrointestinal tract of 30- 50% of the normal populatlon. Most human Infections are endogenous in origin. The name C. dubliniensis has been applied to chlamydosporic strains recovered from patients with HIV infection.
